MAY 25th/2020

Dust off your racquet; we’re opening!

The club will officially reopen on Saturday, May 30th, for singles play only and by reservation only. In this first phase of reopening, members will not be permitted to play doubles and they will not be allowed to simply show up at the courts without a reservation and expect to play.
We are following mandatory instructions given to us by the city. These have been developed to inhibit the spread of the covid-19 virus and to help make everyone feel safe and comfortable during play.
Our website ( is once again accepting membership applications. Fees have been adjusted to account for the shortened season and because many of our usual programmes will be abridged or cancelled.
Those fees are Adult: $110; Seniors: $90; Juniors: $50; Family: $240.
We will start taking reservations for play on Friday, May 29th between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., for court times on Saturday May 30th. Please call 416 699-2412 to make a reservation. Reservations will be made according to whoever gets through to the monitor first. Reservations are made one day in advance. That is, you need to call Monday for a reservation on Tuesday evening; Tuesday for a reservation on Wednesday evening; and so on.
You can reserve only one 45-minute time slot per call and can only reserve one day in advance.
Callers must identify both players who are playing for a particular time slot. Players can play only one 45-minute slot on any given day.
There will be a penalty (to be determined) for players who reserve a court and don’t show up.
To accommodate more play, we are offering extended monitoring hours. Monitors will start at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on weekends.
The hours of play will be from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Monday to Friday time slots are 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.; 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.; 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.; 8 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.; and 8:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The Saturday and Sunday time slots will be 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.; 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.; 11:15 a.m. to noon; and from noon to 12:45 p.m.
The monitor will start answering the phone on weekdays starting at 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m. for reservations for the next day  (that is, for example, you can call as early as 4:30 p.m. Monday for a Tuesday reservation; 4:30 p.m. Friday for a Saturday morning reservation; and 8:30 a.m. Sunday for a Monday evening reservation).
Members need to be aware of various rules for play as we begin our season:

  • Members must each bring their own balls. That is both players playing singles must serve with their own balls, which must be marked in some way to distinguish them from the opponent’s balls and balls used on other courts.

  • When serving, members must serve with their own balls and avoid touching balls of their opponents or of those of the people on other courts. When returning balls to opponents, players must scoop the ball with the racquet or kick the ball to avoiding handling it.

  • We will have balls for sale. But just in case, bring your own.

  • The following special rules apply: Singles tennis only; keep two metres away from other players at all times; avoid touching common areas (the net, fences, poles, gates, etc.); regularly clean or sanitize hands, and avoid touching your face; do not gather before or after you play tennis, and always keep two metres away from others.

  • Members will be required to sign a waiver before they play for the first time to ensure they have read and understood the special rules and agree not to hold the club responsible if they later are found to have caught covid-19 and believe they have caught it while playing at Dentonia.

  • We expect members to take special care when entering and exiting courts to ensure social distancing. Please follow the guidance of the monitors.

  • Play is limited to singles only even in the case of a family of four who want to play together (sorry, those are the rules we are required to apply). However, it may be possible to reserve two courts at the same time, each for singles.

  • We ask members to refrain from normal physical contact. Do not shake hands; do not meet at the net.

  • When changing sides, cross at opposite ends of the net.

  • Before play we ask members to review the guidelines posted at the court.

  • Try to time your arrival at the courts to about the time you expect to play; after play, do not linger around the courts. We are trying to minimize social contact. Do not share equipment.

  • The clubhouse will be open for washing hands and the use of the bathrooms. Do not linger in the clubhouse. Bring your own water or use the drinking fountain at the back of the clubhouse which is turned on and available for club members and public use.

  • The courts will normally be locked outside of monitoring hours. However, we are required to open for some non-monitored public hours, during which the courts are available for both members and nonmembers. Those hours are 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Sundays and 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on public holidays. The courts will not be opened for public hours until we have the required signage from the city.

  • Wind screens will not be put up for now because of the difficulties of hanging them while maintaining social distancing.

  • Nonmembers cannot make reservations. Members can play with a guest for the usual $5 guest fee. The guest can come as a guest no more than three times over the course of the season.

  • For now, we will not be offering morning or evening social programmes and mixers. For now, the singles ladder programme will not be offered.

  • Our club pro, Kent Yee, will be offering lessons ( to no more than two people at a time.

  • We ask that members use Paypal to buy their membership. If that is not possible, please bring a checque or cash to the clubhouse during monitoring hours. Please bring the exact amount. The monitor will not have change.

  • The club will make a special effort to provide products for hand sanitizing and will be rigorous in wiping down counters and other places likely to be touched, and in maintaining a clean environment. Still, we urge members to be cautious and take appropriate care to avoid touching common surfaces.

  • People over 70 years old or with underlying health conditions should recognize that they are at higher risk if they catch the virus, but the club will not screen out anyone because of age or likelihood of having a weakened immune system.

  • We advise taking a self-assessment ( before deciding whether to play.

Please refer to our website ( for further information.
Thank you for your patience as we begin the season under these unusual and difficult circumstances.

ACCESS TO THE COURTS DURING NON-MONITORED HOURSHaving received approval from the City to access the courts for play during non-monitored hours, the combination lock will be put back on the gate to the courts.
The combination for the lock is the same as it was last year. New members can get the combination from one of the monitors during monitored hours (Monitored hours are 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; 5.00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. on weekdays).
The clubhouse will not be available for any reason during non-monitored hours. Players thus will not have access to the washrooms. Sorry. This is a condition imposed on us for the privilege of using the courts during non-monitored hours.
The lock should be left on the fence beside the gate in the locked position when players are playing. Players last to leave the courts should remember to put the lock back on the gate. You need to change the combination away from the correct combination so that the lock will close.
Hours for non-monitored play are as follows: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, and after 9:45 p.m. (As a courtesy to neighbors, do not start before 8 a.m.);  Saturday 1 p.m. to 10:40 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
No reservations are required for non-monitored play (for monitored play, members need to call 416 699-2412 to make a reservation a day in advance; see the website or the previous Newsletter for details). Please observe normal rules for playing times during non-monitored play: a limit of 45 minutes if people are waiting.
Please bring hand sanitizer. You’re likely to need it. While we discourage touching common areas, it can’t always be avoided. You may need to touch the lock and the gate, for example. So, bring and use hand sanitizer for your own protection and to help protect others.
Rules for non-monitored play under pandemic guidelines are similar to those for monitored play:

  1. Maintain physical distancing; keep two metres away from other players at all times; avoid touching common areas (the net, fences, poles, gates, etc.); regularly clean or sanitize hands, and avoid touching your face.

  2. Singles play only.

  3. Every player must bring his or her own balls, and these should be clearly marked. You serve with your balls; your opponent serves with his or her own balls.

  4. Do not handle balls of other players. Kick the ball or use your racquet---not your hand---to direct the balls of other players back to them.

  5. Do not congregate; do not loiter around the courts after play.

  6. Take special care when entering and exiting courts to ensure social distancing.

  7. When changing sides, cross at opposite ends of the net. Do not shake hands.

Members may bring a guest. The fee is $5. We trust that our members (who are universally honest and upright) will pay that fee on behalf of guests to a monitor at earliest convenience.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
